Mohammed Ahmed Ibn Al-Sayid Abdullah, the Mahdi

I am looking for some reliable sources offering biographical information on Mohammed Ahmed Ibn Al-Sayid Abdullah, better known as the 'Mahdi' of Sudan fame. In particular, I am after information about him during his early life before he proclaimed himself the 'guided one' in 1881. I have plenty of material regarding his part in the fight with the British, but it is earlier life I am lacking details.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
