Wolseley's Campaign Journal - Wilson and Wood

For all discussions relating to the Egyptian and Sudanese campaigns fought between 1882 and 1898.

Wolseley's Campaign Journal - Wilson and Wood

Postby Derbys » 10 Feb 2015 18:40

Hi,
Wolseley was far from complimentary, to say the least, regarding Wilson, Wood , Buller and others in his campaign journal of 1884/85. I woud be interested to know if specifically Wood and Wilson had at any time any idea what Wolseley had written about them and if they did, would Wison have known at the time he wrote his account From Korti to Khartoum ?
Apart from Wolseley's journal and Wilson's account (and latterly Mike Snook's Beyond the Reach of Empire) are there any other worthwhile contemporary accounts anyone could recommend ?
Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris,

I recommend perusing my British Military Operations in Egypt and the Sudan: A Selected Bibliography, covering the period 1881-1899 (Lanham, Maryland, USA: Scarecrow Press, 2008) for a number of contemporary sources. There are too many to list in a short message here.
Good luck,
Harold Raugh

Hi Harold,
Thanks, I certainly will. Also read your post on books regarding the Egyptian Army which I'll also track down. Regards, Chris.

Is Wolseley's campaign journal in print or otherwise available on sites such as archive.org?

I bought my much later edition via a well known online auction site. I'm away from my library until 19th but will let you have book details when I get back.
