Please could some body explain who were the Herati troops and what was their uniform.
I recently came across a reference to them and suspected that they were some semi regular Troops of Abdul Khan

Hi there,

I believe they were the troops from Herat whose return to Kabul and subsequent discontent (when they found they weren't going to be paid the arrears they felt were due) sparked the massacre of Cavagnari and his escort a the Bala Hissar. My understanding too was that these were regular troops and not the usual massed tribal levies encountered during this campaign!

I've got an Illustrated London News or Graphic print of Herati cavalry at Kabul c.1879 - can't dig it out right now, but I seem to remember a big furry hat, something perhaps like a busby - so certainly an identifying uniform of some kind.

P.S. - just remembered: the Maiwand Day blog has an excellent Afghan uniform resource, including Herati infantry and cavalry (the calvary uniform is directly from the print I mentioned above).

If you're interested in wargaming the Afghan war, Ethan Reiff gave me an excellent interview on that subject a couple of years ago:
