44th at Gandamak: uniform question

Postby sjwalker51 » 18 Aug 2016 21:18

Would any of the 44th have had yellow facings on the collar and cuffs of their greatcoats? What about NCO's stripes or other rank insignia, and if so, what colour would they be? Doing some uniform research before painting some new wargames figures and while I've seen both depicted in various model dioramas and paintings of the scene, I'm not sure this is anything more than artistic/melodramatic licence, but happy to be corrected, and all advice gratefully received.

Thanks in anticipation

Simon, my understanding is that rank & file (Cpl and below) greatcoats at that time were blue/grey and fitted with a fixed cape (later patterns were removable) with no facing colour. Greatcoats had changed little from the Napoleonic wars in the 1840s and stayed largely the same as far as the Crimean war of the mid 1850s. Sergeants had had their collars and cuffs in the facing colour. Forum member, Tony Barton, might well be able to comment with authority. From memory, I think that greatcoat rank stripes for R&F were white, although there were some periods when they appeared to be the same black that was used on white (drill) shell jackets.

Relic of many a fight and siege and sack, it points a moral and adorns the back.
