2/11th Foot during the 2nd Afghan War

For all discussions relating to the First and Second Afghan Wars of 1839-42 and 1878-80.

2/11th Foot during the 2nd Afghan War

Postby barney5042 » 26 Jun 2017 12:15

Can anyone help with a brief summary of what the 2/11th Foot (later the Devonshire Regiment) did during the 2nd Afghan War?

I'm not looking for anything fancy, just a 2 or 3 paragraph summary of their campaign.

At the moment, all I know is that the 11th left Karachi for Afghanistan on 23 July 1880 and departed from Kandahar for Quetta (on the border) on 15 April 1881. During those 9 months, the 11th suffered terribly, with weather and disease taking its toll; 2/3 of the regiment was no longer fit for service by the time they returned.

Thanks!

Barney,

If you decide to lose yourself in detail, Robinson is brilliant:

Roger E. R. Robinson, W. J. P. Aggett, The Bloody Eleventh: History of the Devonshire Regiment, Volume 2, 1815-1914.

There is a previous VWF topic which has a very similar title:
Movement of the 2/11th (Nth Devonshire) Foot, 2nd Afghan War

Thanks! Unfortunately, I don't have access to The Bloody Eleventh while the other thread doesn't seem to describe what the 2/11th actually did.

Perhaps if someone could scan me the appropriate pages from The Bloody Eleventh that would contain what I'm looking for?

Thanks again,

Barney

Barney,

While not wanting to press the point, I am compelled to point out that Libraries are not unknown there.

I've been down this path before.

I think you can understand that histories of British regiments hold little interest to libraries in the United States. Frankly, it's difficult to find histories of American units at U.S. libraries. General histories of the U.S. Civil War, World War II, and Vietnam are easy to find. Beyond that, U.S. libraries seem to have little interest in military histories.

For example, the University of Georgia with an undergraduate enrollment of 25,000, about 90 minutes from where I live, has Three years in the Bloody Eleventh : the campaigns of a Pennsylvania Reserves regiment, a civil war book. Unfortunately, nothing to the British 11th.

Barney,

Point very well taken: I thought the State Library in Sydney (my home town) held Robinson, but on checking my notes it seems I borrowed it on Inter Library Loan from Melbourne!

Hopefully, someone will respond.

A couple of thoughts. There are countless military titles online. (Unfortunately, from my experience in researching an ancestor who served in the 11th Foot in the late 1790s – early 1800s, there are few on the 11th. However,) If you work your way through Topics in this Sub Forum, you might come across online titles on the Second Afghan War which you can then search for the 2 / 11th’s movements.

I’ve had a quick look at second hand book dealers and it looks like you could acquire Volume II more cheaply by purchasing it direct from the Regimental Museum: http://www.keepmilitarymuseum.org/shop/16/books.

Perusing Topics might also identify other Titles on the Campaign more accessible, and cheaper, from which you can glean the 2 / 11th’s movements.

Failing all the above, I suggest you post again asking for a list of recommended titles on the Campaign and take it from there.

Good luck.

Further to Peter's recommendation re. the Devon and Dorsets Museum at the Keep at http://www.keepmilitarymuseum.org/- assuming they have a reference collection of regimental histories, they might well scan the relevant pages for you. There would probably be a charge. Good luck.

Thanks, I've already tried contacting the museum but, so far, have not received a reply.

I really was hoping someone on the "Victorian Wars Forum" might be able to help.
