Hi all

Just wanted to pick brains...
Have come across a letter saying that on landing in Calcutta the 2nd Bttn Rifle Brigade was sent to the quarters in the 'Madras College" which had been converted to barracks.

Have had a good look but can't find any details of this college. Just wondered if anyone knew of it or if it was known/is know by another name.

Many thanks for the help once again.

Perhaps it is the Madrissa, or Mahomedan College

I think you have hit the nail right on the head Maureen. It seems that it is now called the Aliah University with some controversy over whether it should have the term 'Madrassa' reistated in its title (see sign above gate in enclosed colour photo):

"Aliah University has with it the rich heritage of the 230-year old educational and cultural institution, Mohammedan College of Calcutta, popularly known as Madrasah-i-Aliah, or Calcutta Madrasah, the first educational institution set up in India in 1780 by Warren Hastings, the then Governor General of India. Thus, one of the oldest centres of higher learning and culture, the institution is steeped in history. Many eminent scholars were associated with this institution as administrators, principals, teachers as well as students."

sq
Relic of many a fight and siege and sack, it points a moral and adorns the back.
