Camel Corps 1858-60

Postby jf42 » 29 Apr 2016 13:33

Is anyone familiar with this photograph of the Camel Corps taken at Agra in 1860? The unit was formed in April 1858 from 100- man drafts of 2nd and 3rd Bn Rifle Brigade, together with 200 Sikhs, to support columns pursuing remaining hostile groups that had fled into Rohilkund and Oudh, east of Delhi. The Camel Corps operated for two years and was disbanded in June 1860

Thanks for posting jf42. I had not previously heard of this Camel Corps, only an earlier one, the Scinde Camel Corps, established 1843, which became the Scinde Rifle Corps, Punjab Irregular Force in 1851, later renamed 59th Scinde Rifles.

Cheers

I have an Indian Mutiny Medal to a man in the 80th Foot, who, I believe, was one of about 100 of the regiment who were trained to ride camels. His medal has the 'Central India' clasp, whereas the majority of the men of the regiment received the medal without clasp: viewtopic.php?f=87&t=5764

Yes, it was a new one on me. I see there is a painting of a Scinde Camel corps soldier in the Lyall waterclour collection you mention in your recent post.
