1st Bombay European Fusiliers

Postby keitha » 05 Jan 2009 22:51

Hi could anyone help please, I have just purchased a Mutiny medal to Henry Lumsden, 1st Bombay European Fusiliers. But the suspension is missing so I do not know if he has any bars for this medal. I do have a lady who does some research for me in London but she is away at the moment and I am very curious.

Keith

I would get this checked out on the medal roll for this unit so you can be sure of any clasp entitlement. If it is a no-clasp medal you should have luck finding a replacement (orginal) suspender. If it had a Central India clasp you luck may also be in. If he received any of the other claps it will be more tricky and expensive. Iam guessing it is a no-clasp medal - I'm sure a forum member has one of these medals to this regiment without clasp!

Hopefully someone on here will have the roll.

Thanks Mark, I have asked my researcher to look at and copy the medal roll for me, but it may take her a little time before she gets round to it.

Hi again Keith

Now that you know the medal is a no-clasp issue I would suggest contacting Dixons Medals to see if they have an original suspender in stock or can acquire one for you: http://www.dixonsmedals.co.uk

If not try one of the other medal dealers or even eBay.

Once you have one you can send it to GA Medal Services who do a splendid repair job: www.gamedals.co.uk

If you do get it repaired please do let us know the results.

Mark :)

Warning to other medal collectors, I have just received the medal through the post and discovered it is a fake. The details are it has had the word copy erased from the medal just under the Queens head, and there is a seam around the edge of the medal which has been partialy errased by someone putting the name and unit over the seam. I have informed the seller but have not had a reply yet, Please beware the medal is in the name Lumsden 1st Bombay European Fusiliers.

Keith

I am both shocked and very sorry to hear that the medal has turned out to be a fake! Bit of a minefield out there with medals of late - so many fakes and copies :(

Would you be prepared to post several images of the medal on the forum? If so I will place a warning in the Notice Board section to alert all existing members (and future ones) that this fake has been doing the rounds and to be aware should it ever resurface.

I hope you are able to get your money back!?

Hi, I have attached 2 pictures of the medal

the only points that I noticed was that the medal felt light in the hand, there is evidence of the word copy under the queens head, and a seam runs around the edge of the medal but is hidden by the naming which has been put on over the top of the seam. The seller has agreed to refund my money on the proviso that I send the medal back to them, so please be aware.

Hi, seller did give full refund for this item, please be aware that it may come up for sale in the future, and do not bid on it as an original medal. To give full credit to the seller, I do not think they knew it was a copy.
