12th Royal Lancers 1854-55

Postby Fathertime » 26 Nov 2017 05:12

I am researching a soldier who joined the 12th Lancers around November of 1854. Does anyone know if the regiment was in India at that time? Where would someone from Kent have gone to attest to the 12th? Did they have a depot in England, and where was it? Last question, when did the regiment arrive in the Crimea? I will guess March of 1855.

Bob

The 12th Lancers were in India, quartered at Bangalore between February 1854 and February 1855, when they were ordered to to proceed to the Crimea.

The Regt marched overland and embarked for Egypt where they disembarked and proceeded to Alexandria. From there they re-embarked and eventually arrived in the Crimea in May 1855.

As far as your man is concerned, he could have been recruited into the Regt anywhere in the British Isles, recruiting parties travelled the length and breadth of the country and a man join any Regt he saw fit. The 12th had a Depot at Maidstone at that time, so the chances are as a local man he would have been recruited somewhere in the immediate vicinity.
