Kululee Hospital

Postby Wayne finch » 04 Jan 2017 23:42

Hello All,

My Great Great Great Uncle died of Febris on 6th March 1855 at Kululee Hospital. I cannot find any modern reference to the hospital's location. I believe it was near Scutari Hospital, but I'm not sure.

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

With grateful thanks,

Koulali hospital was about 6 miles North of Scutari main hospital, in an old Turkish cavalry barracks close to the sea shore. It was not established until December 1854, and originally had space for about 750 beds.

However, it didn't really begin to fulfil it's function as an overspill for Scutari until late January 1855. Sadly, despite only having about 300 patients by the end of the month, it's mortality rate was on a par with the main hospital, due mainly to poor and unsanitary conditions. If you want to gain a true picture of the medical situation during the campaign, I would strongly recommend you try and track down the following:

PS if you PM me an email addy I will send you a scan of an original letter forwarding a medal to NOK per your earlier request.

Wayne,
probably you'll know this but "febris" is Latin for "fever" and is not a specific cause of death.
If wounded, his fever was probably from sepsis arising from the wound.
If unwounded, there were many fatal causes of fever in Crimea, notably louse-borne typhus (Rickettsia prowazekii).
