The figure in the photo is a cavalryman and looks to be wearing the Egypt Medal and Khedives Star, so dates from the 1880's not the 1850-60's.

Interesting,
We recieved the picture from relatives and are looking into it.
So if the uniforms from the 1880s he would be nearly 60?
He retired after 22 years in 1863 so clearly not him?
Thanks for the tips.

Andy
He was awarded the French Medal Militaire for Distinguished Conduct as a Colour Sgt. He was the only NCO of the Regt to be granted this award, along with 5 Privates. The awards were given to every participating Regt. by the French Govt, to be allocated amongst NCO's and privates as they saw fit. Officers received the Legion D'Honneur.

As Martin has pointed out, the picture posted could not possibly be him as the medals shown are for a much later campaign. Possibly a son?
Have you enquired at the Regt Museum? They may have extra details and possibly a picture, given his distinguished service.

This is a picture of a Colour Sgt of the 71st serving in the Crimea, it might be him!

Thanks for that info
I am not used this era or the uniforms etc.
Which one could he be?
I was going to ask next where to possibly look for a photograph etc
He was the wife's 2nd great grand uncle and would be great to find more details and a photo.
Is there a museum or archives etc
Lots of googling coming up.
I will look into the regiment museum?
Thanks again

He's the bloke on the left holding the rifle! The badge on his upper sleeve denotes he is a Colour Sgt.
