Medal Roll check for the 89th..............

Postby Victorian Dad » 23 Sep 2017 13:22

Has anyone got access to the medal roll for the 89th regiment?

I'd be very interested to see whether two miscreants that I'm researching James Phipps and John Ratcliffe appear on it. I know they were recruits in 1841 and am curious to know whether they served long enough to have go to the Crimea.

Hi, sorry for the delay in replying, but I've not been able to logon for a few days.

In answer to your question there is a James Phipps on the roll for the 89th, regt.no. 1930, only shows the award of the Crimea Medal, but I would assume he would be entitled to the Sebastopol clasp. Re John Ratcliffe not on the roll for the 89th, but there was a JR in the 4th.

Many thanks Martin that's most interesting!!! I wonder if it's the same PHIPPS? Do army service papers for that period exist?

Since he is the only one on the roll for the 89th I would assume this is your man. The subscription site Find my Past has service records, but only for those men in receipt of a pension, the remainder being destroyed by the army.

Thanks again Martin. I'll see what I can turn up.
