Royal Marines in the 1840s?

Postby Arteis » 21 Jun 2014 12:02

Would the uniforms of the Royal Marines who took part in the 1840s campaigns in New Zealand have looked much the same as those of the Army - ie red shell jackets, forage caps etc? Basically, could I use the same miniatures for both Army and Marines (see below for pic of my Army figures)?

Hi Arteis.

Yes the uniforms apart from facing colour and insignia would have been broadly the same on campaign.

Forage caps (I don't know which specific pattern but the various threads around the forum will give you an idea) that or one of our Maori War experts will lend a hand.
Shell jackets
Dark trousers.

Here is an image of an original RM ORs Coatee from the period.

In NZ at this time, they would have worn Coatees and Shell Jackets. Officers most likely wore their blue frock coats.
