58th regiment

Hi My 3xgreat grandfather William Simpson was transferred to the 58th in 1843 and arrived Sydney NSW on Agincourt in 1844. He had previously been with the 1st Regiment of Foot in Canada. He was discharged on 28 Feb 1853 with the rank of sergeant and later settled in NSW were he was a District Constable in the Liverpool - Campbelltown area. I was hoping that I could find more information of his time in New Zealand.

Dear Jill

There is plenty on the 58th in New Zealand in Barthorp, Michael, To Face the Daring Maoris, (London, 1979). You should be able to get it fairly cheaply in the online second hand market. I can tell you, however, that nobody called Simpson is listed at the index. Many of the people your forbear would have known do of course appear and the story of the war, conditions etc is very well done as is typical of Barthorp's work.
